Salmon in the wild

Small rivers, big rivers, cold glacial rivers, narrow rivers, deep fjords, short fjords, long fjords, the big sea! During their lives, salmon live in many different natural environments. It migrates between freshwater and saltwater. The different environments offer different foods and different dangers. Here you can read about the salmon in the wild where it lives.

Living area

Only 0.6% of all the world's fish species migrate between freshwater and saltwater during their lifetime. The Atlantic salmon is one of them. It feeds and lives in rivers flowing into the North Atlantic, and it grows large in northern ocean areas.

Norway has over 400 rivers with Atlantic salmon. This is almost a quarter of all such rivers in the whole world.

We can roughly divide salmon habitats into three different environments: fjords, waterways (river), and oceans.
